Holding Space for “The Empty Chair” this Holiday Season

The holiday season often brings to mind warm memories—family gatherings, beloved traditions, and foods that evoke generations of celebration. Yet when someone we love is no longer with us, even the most festive moments can feel incomplete. For many, that “empty chair” at the table is a poignant reminder of loss.

To support community members navigating grief during this time of year, Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) will host The Empty Chair at Our Holiday Celebrations, a special gathering focused on comfort, connection, and reflection. Participants will have the opportunity to share stories, honor memories, and explore meaningful ways to acknowledge loved ones during the holidays.

The program is free and open to all—individuals of every faith and background, including interfaith and nontraditional families. It will take place on Thursday, December 11 at 2:30pm at the Katz JCC. Light refreshments will be served.

The Empty Chair will be co-facilitated by Rabbi Richard F. Address, Director of Jewish Sacred Aging, and Reva Farenback-Brateman, JFCS Geriatric Case Manager and Community Educator.

To attend, please RSVP to Reva by Thursday, December 4. at rfbrateman@jfedsnj.org or (856) 424-1333 ext. 1184.
