In celebration of Pride Month, the South Jersey community is invited to a special evening of film, conversation, and connection at the Cherry Hill Public Library. Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS), in partnership with the Cherry Hill Public Library and Cherry Hill Township, will host a screening of No Straight Lines, a compelling documentary exploring the history and impact of LGBTQ+ comic artists.
The event will take place on Wednesday, June 10 at the Cherry Hill Public Library, located at 1100 Kings Highway North. The evening will begin at 6:00pm with refreshments and resource tables featuring local organizations, followed by the film screening at 6:30pm and a post-film Q&A discussion.
No Straight Lines traces the journey of five pioneering queer comic book artists who emerged from the underground comix movement and helped bring LGBTQ+ stories into the mainstream. Blending art, humor, and history, the film highlights how these creators used their work to challenge norms, share personal stories, and make LGBTQ+ lives more visible during a time when representation was deeply limited.
The documentary also explores the broader cultural shift sparked, in part, by artists like Alison Bechdel—whose acclaimed graphic memoir Fun Home earned her a MacArthur “Genius” Award and helped usher LGBTQ+ comics into wider recognition. Through candid storytelling and creative expression, the artists featured in No Straight Lines offer powerful insight into the role of art as a tool for advocacy, identity, and social change.
Premiering at major film festivals including Tribeca and Sheffield DocFest, and earning accolades such as the Grand Jury Award at Outfest and recognition from the National LGBTQ+ Journalists Association, No Straight Lines has been widely praised for its engaging and thought-provoking portrayal of LGBTQ+ history through the lens of comics.
This Pride Month program reflects JFCS’s ongoing commitment to building a welcoming, inclusive community where all individuals feel seen, supported, and celebrated. Event admission is free, and all are welcome to attend. Advance registration is preferred by clicking HERE.
