Adar 5786 / February 2026

Dear Friends,

The month of Adar brings with it one of Judaism’s most joyful teachings: “When Adar enters, we increase in joy.” This simple phrase from the Talmud captures the special spirit of the season – one that reaches its peak during Purim. The Purim story reminds us that even in difficult moments, light and hope can emerge in unexpected ways. It teaches that joy isn’t only something we feel – it’s something we practice, a courageous choice we make again and again, even when it feels out of reach.

Adar is also known as a month of strength – a time to tap into resilience, possibility, and the belief that better days are ahead. And in the most meaningful way, Adar calls us toward unity and inclusion, reflected in Purim’s beautiful traditions: Mishloach Manot, sending gifts of food to friends, and Matanot La’evyonim, giving to those in need.

These acts of sharing and nourishing others are at the very heart of our Soups & Sweets culinary training program.

For many of us, some of life’s greatest moments of warmth and joy come from gathering in the kitchen with friends and loved ones—to cook, laugh, share stories, and create something delicious together. Every day, that same feeling fills the Soups & Sweets Kitchen, dedicated by the Dubrow, Weiss, and Gelman Families. In this state-of-the-art space, students with diverse learning needs build confidence, develop real-world skills, and discover the pride that comes from meaningful work.

In our beautifully renovated space within the Jonathan Sinay Building, students learn hands-on skills in a commercial-grade kitchen, the fully equipped J-Sips Café, and our mini market. On any given weekday, you’ll find students greeting customers at the café counter, serving savory soups, baked goods, and seasonal favorites like macaroni and cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches to Aleph Adult Day Center clients, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Along the way, our students gain practical training for a range of food industry roles while building independence, connection, and a true sense of belonging. When they graduate, they leave not only with new skills but with a clear path forward.

This Purim, we invite you to bring a taste of Soups & Sweets into your home by baking a batch of our students’ delicious hamantaschen with family or friends. To view the recipe – and a wonderful video of our students in action – click here.

Thank you for making programs like Soups & Sweets possible. Your support helps create a community where every person is seen, valued, and given the opportunity to thrive.

May your home and your heart be filled with joy and laughter this month! Chag Purim Sameach – Happy Purim!

With appreciation,

Melanie and Jill
