For many of us, transportation is something that hardly merits a second thought. We get in the car, start the ignition, and head out—whether it’s to the grocery store, a doctor’s appointment, or a lunch date with a friend. That simple act of freedom represents independence, connection, and choice.
But when driving is no longer an option—whether due to age, health concerns, or changing circumstances—independence can quickly feel out of reach. Everyday tasks become complicated, and staying connected to care and community can feel overwhelming. Jewish Family & Children’s Service believes that losing the ability to drive should never mean losing access to the life you deserve. That’s why we offer several transportation options designed to meet older adults where they are and help them get where they need to go.
For individuals who are already connected to JFCS Older Adult Services, our Medical Rides program provides free, volunteer-driven transportation to medical appointments and JFCS counseling sessions or support groups. These rides are made possible by our dedicated, vetted volunteers and are available up to two round trips per week, based on availability and assessed need. While rides must be scheduled in advance and cannot be guaranteed, this program helps ensure that essential care remains within reach for those who need it most.
Veterans living in Burlington, Camden, or Gloucester counties may be eligible for Take the Wheel, a similar volunteer-based program focused specifically on medical transportation. This free service offers up to two round-trip medical rides per week, helping veterans access the care they so richly deserve. As with Medical Rides, scheduling is based on availability and requires advance notice, but the goal is the same: reducing barriers and supporting independence.
For those seeking more flexibility, JFed Rides offers reliable, fee-based transportation options open to anyone. Through our partnership with Envoy America, riders are matched with paid companion drivers who can provide one-way or round-trip rides for virtually any purpose—medical appointments, errands, social outings, and more. Rides are guaranteed, scheduling is flexible, and drivers can even stay with a rider during procedures when needed. Subsidies may be available for eligible Jewish residents of Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester counties, making this option more accessible for many South Jersey residents.
No matter your situation, JFCS is here to help you navigate transportation with confidence and ease. If you or a loved one could benefit from these services, we encourage you to reach out and learn more. Staying connected—to care, to community, and to independence—should always be within reach. JFCS is here to help!
