Jewish tradition teaches us that what we count, we value. This wisdom resonates deeply during the month of Iyar, when we find ourselves in the midst of Sefirat HaOmer — the counting of the Omer. Each evening, we pause to acknowledge another day in our journey from Passover’s freedom to Shavuot’s revelation, marking not just the passing of time, but the meaning we create within it.
This practice of mindful counting reminds us that every day offers a new opportunity to make a difference. At JFCS, we see this truth unfold in countless ways through the compassion of our staff, the dedication of our volunteers, and the courage of those we serve.
When we count with intention, ordinary numbers transform into extraordinary stories:
Behind the 108 staff members are thousands of moments of genuine connection — a counselor who listens without judgment, a job coach who goes the extra mile, a Russian-speaking case manager who brings comfort in a client’s native language.
Within the 200 volunteers are countless hours freely given — hands that deliver meals, hearts that offer companionship, and spirits that embody the true meaning of community.
Each of the 475 monthly grocery distributions represents a family experiencing not just nourishment, but dignity and hope during challenging times.
Our Soups & Sweets students baked 600 delicious Hamantaschen to sweeten Purim celebrations and spread joy throughout the community.
The 846 Passover meals delivered to Holocaust Survivors and older adults created meaningful connections during a holiday that celebrates freedom and resilience.
Through our youth outreach programs such as One Step at a Time, 3,287 students have learned valuable lessons about addiction prevention, healthy relationships, mental wellness, and community support.
And as we prepare to honor 4,000 veterans’ graves next month for Memorial Day, we remember that each flag represents a life dedicated to service and sacrifice.
These numbers matter because they represent real people with real stories. And behind every story is you — your generosity, your compassion, your belief that everyone deserves dignity and support.
As we continue counting the Omer this month, we invite you to join us in making each day count in new ways. Whether through deepening connections with those you serve, sharing JFCS’s mission with others in your circle, mentoring someone in your professional field, or simply taking a moment to reflect on the impact of your contributions, you — our dedicated supporters — have the power to magnify meaning in seemingly ordinary moments.
Thank you for counting yourself among our community of care, and for counting on JFCS to be there for our neighbors in need. Your trust inspires us daily. Together, we’re not just counting days — we’re making days count.
With deep appreciation and gratitude,
Melanie & Jill, Associate Executive Directors
