Mark first connected with JFCS in 2018, inspired by a deeply personal experience. When a family member who lived far away was diagnosed with a degenerative memory condition, Mark was moved to find a meaningful way to support others facing similar challenges. He found that opportunity through Café Connection, JFCS’s monthly gathering for individuals living with memory loss and their care partners.
A retired math teacher, Mark has long understood the importance of keeping the mind active and engaged. He also brings a lifelong love of music and the arts to everything he does. Over the years, he has directed musicals at Cherry Hill High School West and led Purim productions at Kol Ami. He currently sings with both the Kol Ami choir and the Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia.
Recognizing the powerful connection between music and memory, Mark has become a beloved Café Connection Guest Artist. He thoughtfully creates interactive programs featuring classic Broadway musicals, guiding participants through storylines, sharing memorable film clips, and leading spirited sing-alongs. Whether revisiting favorites such as Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, Oklahoma!, or Guys and Dolls, Mark’s presentations spark joy, encourage participation, and create meaningful moments of connection. We are all eagerly looking forward to his upcoming Annie program this December.
Beyond sharing his musical talents, Mark is a true friend to everyone who attends Café Connection. According to facilitator Reva Farenback-Brateman:
“Mark is dependable and open to doing anything that needs to be done, from chatting with participants and helping them feel comfortable to handing out materials, encouraging someone to try something new, or simply being a friendly face. He is a joy to work with.”
Mark’s commitment to lifelong learning and community service extends well beyond JFCS. He volunteers as an ESL teacher at the Cherry Hill Library and teaches a Mental Aerobics class at the JCC.
When he is not volunteering, Mark enjoys spending time with his family. He and his wife, Maxine, have been happily married for 53 years and live in Cherry Hill. They are the proud parents of two adult children and doting grandparents to their grandson, Benjamin.
For Mark, one of the most rewarding aspects of Café Connection is witnessing the friendships and support networks that develop among participants and caregivers alike. JFCS is deeply grateful for the creativity, compassion, and enthusiasm he brings to the program. His dedication enriches the lives of so many, and we are proud to have him as part of our volunteer family.
