Looking back on your time as Board President, what accomplishment makes you the most proud? It is difficult to choose one particular accomplishment. Rather, what I am most proud of is seeing the meaningful impact of our work for so many people across our community. As the president, I have been honored to be a part of so many beautiful moments that all together equal one big amazing accomplishment.
What is something people would be surprised to learn about being Board President? Everyone knows that the role of president is a big responsibility, but I think people would be surprised to learn just how much the president is involved in planning, decision making and supportive work, not just for JFCS, but also across the Federation system. As an integrated Jewish Federation, the president of any one agency is also part of a larger landscape and is able to have a perspective beyond the lens of one agency.
Can you share a favorite memory or moment from your time as President There are many! However, one of my most my favorite memories is how JFCS and our community came together during the SNAP crisis last winter. What an uplifting moment for us to turn such a terrible and frightening time into something meaningful and good. So many people and groups contributed their time, energy and resources to make sure that people in our community did not go hungry. What a proud moment for us all!
What advice would you give to future board leaders? Lead with humility, listen carefully and fully. Say “thank you” often! Stay true to the mission but think creatively and work collaboratively. Take joy in being able to serve your community. Yes, it is work and lots and lots of time, but in addition to doing good work for others, your life will be so much richer for the contributions you can make and the relationships you will develop.
As you pass the torch, what are your hopes for the future of JFCS? My hope is that JFCS continues to light our way during difficult and uncertain times. I hope that we will be able to reach more people, inspire others to join us, and keep leading with compassion. Most of all, I want us to be a source of hope, support and positive change here in our South Jersey community.
