Adar 5785 / February 2025

The month of Adar brings with it one of Judaism’s most joyful teachings: “When Adar enters, we increase in joy.” This simple phrase from the Talmud captures the special energy of this month, which reaches its peak during Purim. The Purim story reminds us that even in challenging times, light and hope can emerge in unexpected ways.

The holiday’s traditions of Matanot L’evyonim (gifts to those in need) and Mishloach Manot (sharing food with others) beautifully mirror what we do every day at JFCS. These acts of giving are at the heart of our mission every day of the year. Through our Betsy & Peter Fischer Food Pantry, we’re privileged to fight hunger in South Jersey, distributing 18,940 bags of food—193,147 pounds—in Fiscal Year 2024 alone. Yet our impact extends far beyond nourishment. We offer dignity, confidentiality, and peace of mind to countless individuals and families who turn to us in times of need.

The warmth of this support touches lives in profound ways. As one client recently shared, “I’m reaching out to thank the JFCS team for all the items I received yesterday. I’m also deeply grateful for how kind, caring, and supportive they were during this unexpected low point in my life. They listened patiently as I cried about my circumstances. Your support means so much.”

None of this would be possible without the extraordinary embrace of our community. Each year, dedicated volunteers at Congregation Beth El and Temple Beth Sholom hand-prepare and package more than 2,000 kosher meals for our clients, while community partners including the Katz JCC and Cherry Hill Township rally their members for food drives that stock our pantry shelves. Local establishments including Classic Cake and the Bagel Spot donate delicious baked goods to share with our clients. Individual donors and foundations provide the sustaining support that keeps our programs strong, as dedicated volunteers deliver groceries, meals, and holiday treats to neighbors in need. And at the heart of it all, our remarkable staff transforms this outpouring of generosity into real help for real people, every single day.

One of our greatest joys at JFCS is sharing the spirit of chesed (kindness) with the next generation. Recently, we had the privilege of welcoming two incredible youth groups to our Rhona Fischer Family Assistance Building / Betsy & Peter Fischer Food Pantry.

Last fall, Girl Scout Troop 31905 spent a meaningful afternoon learning about hunger relief, leadership, and the power of giving. Their troop leader later wrote: “Thank you for your time, passion, and for being such incredible role models. Your insights and enthusiasm left a lasting impression and sparked ongoing conversations. Troop 31905 hopes to be part of the change in our community!”

Earlier this month, Rebbetzin Sarah Bienenfeld of Young Israel of Cherry Hill brought her Bat Mitzvah Club to tour our pantry, stock shelves, and assemble food packages for clients. These young women asked thoughtful, mature questions that reflected a deep understanding of chesed. It was truly inspiring to witness their engagement and generosity.

As we approach Purim, we invite you to join in this season of joy by sending a JFCS tribute card—each one featuring artwork created by our clients. These cards offer a beautiful way to celebrate with loved ones while supporting our life-changing work. Click here to send a tribute and help us continue spreading joy throughout our community.

May this month of Adar fill your home and your heart with joy and laughter.

With gratitude,

Melanie & Jill, Associate Executive Directors
