The Jewish Federations of North America report that in the United States, Holocaust Survivors represent one of the most vulnerable older adult populations. Their previous traumatic experiences have resulted in higher rates of mental, physical, and cognitive decline. Many Survivors need additional support in order to maintain their dignity, health, and independence as they age. Caring for South Jersey’s Holocaust Survivors is central to the mission of Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS).
Our Holocaust Survivor Services & Advocacy staff helps Survivors age safely and independently in their homes through a holistic array of comprehensive services. Using a person centered trauma informed (PCTI) approach, our team works with Survivors, their families, and their caregivers to help clients maintain a high quality of life, connect them to resources, and maintain a meaningful sense of community.
While every Survivor has unique needs and experiences, many Survivors from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) consider themselves to be a distinct group. These individuals tend to be drawn to one another because of their shared language and cultural experiences. Now, thanks to funding from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the State of New Jersey, the Jewish Federations of North America, Kavod SHEF, the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey, and the Raymond & Gertrude R. Saltzman Foundation, JFCS has been able to significantly expand our services for FSU Survivors.
The addition of a full-time Russian-Speaking Case Manager and a Russian-Speaking Activities Coordinator has enhanced our staff’s ability bridge the communication gap with clients and provide the culturally sensitive, relationship-based care that defines the JFCS mission.
Additional supports may be available for FSU Survivors currently living in Burlington, Camden, or Gloucester counties. Eligible individuals may be entitled to free social services through JFCS, including:
- Homecare and housekeeping support
- In-home visits by a social worker
- Catered kosher home-delivered meals
- Transportation for medical appointments
- Monthly social programs in English and Russian
- Medical equipment
- Assistance with medical and dental expenses
If you believe that you, a loved one, or someone you know may be eligible for these services, please contact Jamila Kulov, Russian-Speaking Case Manager, at (856) 424-1333 ext. 1109 or jkulov@jfedsnj.org.
