Everyone needs a break. You’re no exception.

Are you overwhelmed by caring for your child (up to age 21) with an intellectual or developmental disability? Providing constant, loving support can be draining on many levels: physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. It leaves you with little time to run errands, relax with friends, or get the emotional support you need to recharge.

The JFCS Self-hired Respite Program gives parents the option of hiring someone they already know and trust— like a friend, neighbor, or family member—to care for their child. It also helps families who worry they may be “wearing out their welcome” with unpaid caregivers. It enables families to get reimbursed for the costs of a paid caregiver, which are critical on the journey of caring for a family member with disabilities.

Thanks to increased funding from the NJ Department of Children and Families, eligible families can now utilize up to 90 hours of care within each 90-day period. Once you choose your respite provider, JFCS will handle all of the details to make sure your child’s care goes smoothly. The best part? Your child gets to spend productive, quality time each week with someone you already know and trust.
